Finding an affordable apartment in the city, even during the Great Recession, is tough, but doing it with pets is almost impossible. Every time I've had to look for a place, it's been a huge issue. I always mention the dogs, after all, they are tough to hide, but I kinda let the cat thing slide. I don't mention her and none of my landlords so far has said a word. (I realize posting this info on a blog seems crazy, but as you know keeping a pet openly and notoriously in NYC can work to your advantage.) In any case, I just feel like saying something upfront about two dogs AND a cat will pretty much get the door slammed in my face in any broker's office. Plus, does the cat really bother anyone? I'm not sure it's the most moral thing to do, but it's certainly the most practical. What do the rest of you cat owners do? Do you mention your feline companions or just figure it's none of your landlord's business?
