The Daily News had a nice profile today of a Joaquin Mora, a guy who volunteers 40 a week to rescuing dogs, cats, hens, whatever in Long Island City and Willets Point Queens. You read that right. He works full time without pay to help animals even though he bearely has a dime and supports himself selling scrap metal. Definately my new hero and very deserving of his recent Presidential Call to Service award shown here.
The article mentions all the strays that live in and around the auto body shops near CitiField in Willets Point, which is pretty much my backyard. Apparently the city is relocating the businesses and the animals will soon be even more destitute, which is saying a lot if you've ever been out there. I hope something can be done for them.
